Saturday October 3rd in Guayama Puerto Rico the Phi Eta Mu Fertarnity put on their 2nd annual BBQ Challenge. The contest was run by Jose "Pepin" Villares Chapter of the Phi Eta Mu Fraternity.
This was quite different from all of the BBQ contest the CBBQA usually does in that the rules of this contest somewhat loose compared to what we usually do. However, in the end it turned our really well. We had some good BBQ and a great time.
The Contest took place in a large farm field just outside of Guayama Puerto Rico on Saturday afternoon October 3rd. It was a warm am beautiful day for a BBQ. The teams were spread out under groups of large shade trees and Phi Eta Mu Fraternity had a full bar set up in the field to help keep all the Pit Masters cooled down while they grilled hotdogs and hamburgers for the hungry crowd.
In this particular contest each of 13 different fraternity chapters had a team entered to cook BBQ. They were allowed to cook only one dish for the judges to taste and could choose from poultry, pork, or beef. Turn in time came at 4:30Pm with 10 Judges to sample and taste test each BBQ entry.
I really like the contest out in the field and under the big shade trees. Everyone backed up their pickup trucks and started setting up the cook areas and it resembled a cool tailgate party.

Be on the lookout for more and better BBQ Competitions from these college teams. They are very interested in learning the art of slow smoke BBQ cooking and love a good competition, and there is some discussion of starting a College BBQ Bowl in the Island of Puerto Rico in the near future. It looks like the future Pit Masters of the Caribbean are getting their training started.
