The second annual Mendez La Bodega barbecue contest, held at La Bodega de Mendez in Anasco on September 9, was bigger and better than ever this year. Over 300 guests enjoyed the barbecue, wine, beer and live music. Ten teams competed for the title of West Coast Barbecue Champion. When the smoke cleared, Greg Fyffe and Team Humo were victorious again. They obviously have barbecue cooking figured out since they have also won the Jack Daniel's competition in San Juan the past two years in a row. In October they will be heading to Lynchburg, TN to represent Puerto Rico in the Jack Daniel's Invitational World BBQ Championship. The Reserve Champion, or overall runner-up, was Brasas Restaurant from Rincon Beach Resort. Cash prizes of $300 for Grand Champion and $200 for Reserve Champion were awarded. In addition to the cash prizes, beautiful trophies made from crystal wine decanters with etched engraving were awarded for 1st through 3rd place in each category.
This year's categories included seafood, beef, poultry, pork ribs and barbecue sauce. The cooks really displayed their expertise by turning in delicious entries that were thoroughly enjoyed by the judges. The competition judging was organized and supervised by the Caribbean BBQ Association. Most of the judges had attended a BBQ judge's training class, conducted by CBBQA, and are certified, trained judges. Establishing standard rules, and utilizing experienced, trained judges, ensures consistency and fairness in contests supervised by the Caribbean BBQ Association. This marked the first year that cash prizes have been awarded at Jack Daniel's and La Bodega. The CBBQA hopes to organize more contests in the coming year and increase the amount of the cash prizes.
Each team was provided with a case of 30 pounds of chicken donated by Tyson Foods and two bags of hardwood charcoal donated by Carbon de la Matta. They also received a case of Heineken and two bottles of wine from La Bodega. We also utilized judging materials, including score sheets and sample plates provided by the Kansas City BBQ Society.
