Cattlemen’s BBQ 2009 PDF Print E-mail

It was warm, and I do mean warm, June 27th when the 2nd annual Cattlemen’s BBQ fired up at the PR Convention Centre. But I was OK with that since last year was a wet one all weekend long.

San Juan was ready for their heaping helping of some good BBQ and the BBQ & Lechon teams were ready to deliver it to them too. By popular demand from the public the teams cook and served over 500 pounds of brisket and 100 pounds of Prime Certified Angus Beef Ribeye steaks, 4,000 pounds of Tyson chicken breast, wings & thighs, 100 pounds of Loggins Ribeye steaks, 200 racks of Smithfield Meats pork spare ribs, 1,700 pounds of fresh / never frozen whole hogs from Puerto Rico’s only “Fine Genetics Pork Farm” La Cebia, and 5,800 Oscar Mayer and Ball Park Frank’s hotdogs. Man there was some serious eating going on for two days. Teams and sponsoring companies alike had their best grill hands on deck Saturday & Sunday slow smoking, grilling and barbecuing, and handing out free samples of meat.
Over 40 teams competed in the Cattlemen’s BBQ and 20 Lechoneras competed in the very difficult whole hog “a la varita” or “on the spit” competition and 8 of the finest Chef’s you could imagine competed in the Chef’s Challenge.

With over 60 Judges certified during May & June of 2009 and 75 people having attended The Caribbean BBQ Training Camps to ready them for the competition, this years’ field of competitors and Judges has never been more prepared to do the Battle of the BBQ.

The Department of Agriculture had a colourful and interesting booth displaying all the wonderful fruits and vegetables produced locally and brought our attentions to the La Cebia for which we will be forever grateful. Puerto made me proud those two days and showed everyone that we can produce some of the finest food on planet earth. Puerto Rico was shinning and looking great that weekend. We also had a great surprise with the introduction to Primo Grills from the great state of Georgia. You really have to go to their web page www.primogrill.com and check this unit out. It grills and it smokes, and it is the best new grill product I have seen in years.

Hey don’t forget that the next BBQ Competition, La Bodega de Mendez, coming to Puerto Rico is September 26th at Anasco, Puerto Rico. Contact Michelle Lopez, Brand Manager Wine Division, 787-277-5811at Mendez & Company for details, to enter a team, or to find out about the time, and cost of tickets.

Ok BBQ fans. I gotta get out here and fire up my new Primo Grill. I got a man size appetite for some good BBQ.
