I have found another excellent BBQ Joint, Smoke House BBQ, in Luquillo / Fajardo area that is worthy of you planning a trip for or stopping by next time you're in that area.
Smoke House BBQ is the brainchild of Chef Carolyn Rivera and Shelia Rivera, opened June 5th 2013 on Carr #3, Km 41.0 BO Juan Martin and just spitting distance from Lolita's Mexican Restaurant. This is great place to get your BBQ fix taken care of. They got the BBQ bug while living in California and there opening a new restaurant. They were eating their way around the local BBQ & smoke house places and decide to return to PR to open a restaurant with something different than the usual local cuisine. With BBQ being the fastest growing food genre it was a good decision.
Chef Carolyn has the back of the house operations. Dad, Clemente, is the AM Pit Master until Carolyn comes in and, mother Carmen, makes those killer corn muffins. All ingredients for every recipe demand fresh, never frozen products and you can tell it is prepared with love and passion for their food.
Shelia operates the front of the House that is warm, comfortable and inviting. They have a nice bar and specialize in Whisky's with 40 + brands and still growing. The dining room décor makes it feel like "Dicky's BBQ Joint", one of my favorite place for BBQ in Hendersonville Tennessee. The decorations on the walls, red & white cloth dinner napkins, soft drinks served in Mason Jars, and Hickory and Cherry wood stacked up against a wall near the kitchen. They tell me they will be bringing in Mesquite wood in the near future, a fovirite of those who like the flavor of Texas in their BBQ
I like the see through Plexiglas window that lets you see what happens in the kitchen. It bares the company logo designed by Carolyn's brother, a hog with an industrial city growing out of it back. For some time one of my best friends has been telling me about this place and on My 16th I finally got to experience it for myself. I would call this a southern style BBQ Joint. The term Joint is all a compliment too. It's warm and friendly, has a good family vibe to it. The aroma lifts you up a little when you walk in and it moves you towards a seat.
You can see the whole menu on the web site. The best sellers are the ribs. They have both Baby Back and St. Luis cut spare ribs, Certified Angus Beef (CAB) brisket, chicken, and a ground NY steak burger to die for. They also have some good non BBQ plates too.
We started with the stuffed mushroom appetizer. They were so darn good, the best I've had in years. I had the 2 meat combo of brisket and baby back ribs, mac & cheese, corn on the cob and mashed potatoes. Every item was spot on the mark. We wrapped up with desserts a Crème Brule and peach & berry cobbler that my mother & grandmother would have been proud to serve. They even serve this in mason jars to complete the whole down home, home cooked meal effect. Well done ladies.
